1st Week Home

Yah, I know...I'm guilty of blog neglect. It's been hard justifying getting onto the computer when I've got this new little fella in my life. It's just been such a privilege and joy being in Kai's time and space these past few weeks. Most days, I feel as if I have known Kai for a long time - it is just so RIGHT having him in our lives. Kai has enriched our lives and filled us with overwhelming love and togetherness. I promise to post more in the days to come. It's been important to get back on schedule after the three of us have experienced all the change, travel, chest colds, and jet lag. For now, I will leave you with a few photos. (FIRST PICT: today during lunch. Within the last day, Kai has just gained enough strength and muscle control to hold up his own bottles. His drinks are a bit heavier because they are supplemented with Carnation's Instant Breakfast to help him gain weight. Kai had his first pediatrician visit on Monday and was weighed at just over 17 lbs. We're working hard to beef him up.) (SECOND PICT: our first hour with Kai in Nanjing. We had just returned to the hotel after meeting Kai. He had great eye contact right from the get go. Our little guy was swimming in his clothing. He weighed under 16 lbs. and had very weak core strength. It's amazing how many changes have occured in the three weeks since we became a family.)

more

more pics

sorry havent been able to post

I know we haven;t been very good at posting whilein China. We have been kept so busy, that when we actually get the chance to sleep, we take it. I have started severaldraft posts, but never have the opportunity to send them. I think I'm going to copy some other bloggy folks and designate days of the week to cover certain aspects of our trip.
Kai is doing well...he's a lot of fun to be around 1:1. His smile and laughter are infectious and he is becoming more and more connected with us each day. I'll write more once we get home regarding his personality and development. But as for now we will work at getting more photos uploaded to the blog.

We are complete!

Today we met the one thing missing in our already full and wonderful life together - we met Kai.

Kai is the sweetest, most gentle little boy you will ever meet. Kai looks longingly into our eyes, craving that contact at all times. He has settled in with us almost instantly. He wants to be held at all times or sitting beside us on the bed playing with his toys. Kai is even smaller than we expected, his tiny little body will quickly become stronger with 1:1 attention and exercise, but at the moment, he is swimming in his clothing and we haven't any other options for a while. He loves his board books, stuffed animals and other odds and ends that become toys once he gets hold. He just fell asleep (hours past his scheduled nap time - hopefully we won't regret this later ). I don't have too much time to write before I'll need to wake him, but here are a few things we are learning about our Kai Kai:

  • Banging hard objects together like drums is the best.
  • Size 18 mth pants literally fall off his body when he is picked up - we think he is around 16 lbs.
  • He love playing by the window and mirror.
  • Dropping objects to make Baba pick them up thousands of times is the best form of entertainment.
  • Eye contact is a must every few seconds to make sure we are both still here.
  • Kai is extremely observant, watching absolutely everybody and everything around him.
  • He knows how to drink from an open cup if it is held up to him.

Well, I really should wake him now (as much as I'd rather not- he looks so peaceful). I'll have Rob post a few photos when he gets the chance and when we get home we will post the video of our first encounter together. Tomorrow everything becomes completly official and he will be ours always!

  • He may have a few tiny unrepaired holes in his palate - H2O made an appearence from his nostrils.

We're in Nanjing!

Wow. Busy, busy, busy. We haven't stopped moving. We just flew into the city. We had hoped for more time to write on the blog, but we are in the room very seldom -  and are always on the move. Instead of being in a large group, as we were in Beijing, we are on our own until Friday. We met our new guide for this leg of the trip and he will be with us as we complete Kai's adoption and for a few days of sightseeing. We will rejoin our travel group in Guangzhou on Friday night until our departure Thursday.
So tomorrow a.m. at 9:30, we will meet our little Kai Kai! Our guide will bring us to the CCAA's Nanjing office to receive Kai from the orphanage staff. I am told that Nanjing's process is streamlined. Rather than needing to make multiple visits to government offices, we will be able to do everything in one place. Even though the hotel, orphanage, and government offices are very close in distance, the heavy road congestion makes any commuting a difficult pursuit. Tomorrow will be considered our "bonding period" to introduce families to their child before they are expected to make the lifelong commitment. On Wed. we will finalize his adoption with a few more documents and an interview with officials.
We will likely be able to visit his orphanage as well. Most families are not permitted to do so, however, Nanjing SWI is more accommodating in this way. It will be invaluable to us and Kai to meet his caregivers and experience the atmosphere of this facility. Well we really need to prepare for tomorrow and get some rest before our BIG DAY! Until tomorrow.... -Beth

CHINA BOUND

Okay, before I start, let me say that I cannot actually "see" my own blog due to censorship issues. We are, however, able to make posts through a backdoor loophole.....

Hi everybody…Guess where we are????? That's right - CHINA! Okay, so as am I'm writing this, we are in fact NOT in China, but it will be posted once we are settled in the hotel. At present, we are in an area that does not have service. We are, in fact, flying directly over the Arctic (dead center of the North Pole)! We are seated within the interior aisle, so we had to take a peek out of an exit window. I have included a picture of the spectacular view! We only saw it briefly, so as not to block the way but MAN is this cool!  So far we are 3856 miles from Beijing. We have traveled a distance of  2896 miles since we departed from Chicago. We are flying at an altitude of 34500 ft.  It is a whopping  -56 degrees F outside and we are expecting to land at 2:37 p.m. (you're a.m.).
So enough with the stats…on to the gossip. There is another family beside us from another agency. With them are their 17ish biological daughter and 6 year old Chinese daughter. I believe they are from Texas.? Well, anyway…their original flight was canceled so they were added to this flight. As it turns out, they were not able to be seated together…the wife was assigned a few rows back, the dad was in front of the girls, but sitting w/ someone else. Its hard to describe the scene. There was sooooo much drama. The parents insisted on sitting together without any regard for the Chinese gentleman that had purchased the pricier Economy Plus seating. (We were originally assigned to Econ too but were given a complimentary upgrade). The poor guy was stuck standing in the aisle w/ flight attendants doing their best to rectify the situation. The couple then became belligerent! The woman started crying and saying that she refused to move, she'd had a long day, and paid a lot of money for her seat. The husband stood up and started raising his voice. Arrogant, entitled little worm. He was asked to "step outside" by flight attendants, a marshal, and the Captain!!!! He refused to budge!!! They basically gave him his options…1) keep it up and be removed and heavily fined or 2) sit down, be quiet, and the wife needs to sit in HER seat. The poor kids never said a word - we were mortified for them. I mean, really, in this era of flight risks/security, he wants to throw a fit to get comp'd a couple bucks??? They nearly blew the entire family's plan and some child's hope for a family. I suspect that their children have and will witness many more parental tantrums trying to bully their way into getting needs met. Sad, sad. Once we took off, his bravado ended and it was a nice trip.
Back to happy  thoughts. We still have another 6 hrs to go, but so far my back has held out despite all the sitting. The extra leg room is nice (we have a couple more inches of floor space than we were supposed to have). We napped for a few minutes, but it is pretty tricky to get comfortable enough to stay asleep.
We had stayed up until about 12:30 finalizing everything at home and showering, etc. Unfortunately, even though I was exhausted, I couldn't't get my brain to stop (worrying that I missed something) and was never able to fall asleep. I ended up spending the next few hours cleaning and organizing more until it was time to leave. My eyes are very strained, but I don't feel tired. We'll need to stay awake when we land because it will be midday.  I imagine that this may become a very long post if I have the time and energy to write more after we are done sight seeing today. I still can't believe that we started the day in NH, went to Chicago, saw polar ice caps, and will be checking into the Marriott in Beijing and having dinner. That my friends, is a FULL day. What did you do today??

...Okay, back again. It is about 10 pm. We are positively beat. I am posting some pictures of the flight, us/group at the Beijing Airport Terminal, and some buildings from the tour bus window as we drove to our hotel. We had dinner at a local noodle shop and returned to our room to set up the Internet.

The families within our group are great. It's definitely nice to have others to ask questions (in case one of us misses something.) Our Beijing guide, Rose, is very helpful and interesting. Tomorrow we will go to the Great Wall and do some serious steps (none of them are uniform and the rise is much higher than we are accustomed to using).  We will also visit the Olympic sights: The Birdnest and the Cube. If we are not too tired following this, we will attend an acrobatic performance or see a Chinese opera. Well, I am having to go back and fix several typos because I am too tired to see straight. I'm going to post some picts and hit the upholstered plywood...I mean mattress.  :) Good Night/Good Morning!
....Okay I have been fighting w/ my computer to download the photos, but it isn't working and Rob passed out 290 minutes ago. I'll try again tomorrow when i can think straight. Bye!  -Beth

We're Here!!!

We have arrived and are exhausted, but very excited.
