Kai had his visit with the Cleft Clinic yesterday. We met with a Speech Pathologist, and an Orthodontist, and Kai's cleft surgeon. I am more than excited to announce that our surgeon wants to cancel plans for Kai's hard palate revision in June. Since the doctor last saw Kai's palate in January, the fistulas seem to be smaller in size. Because they are not problematic to Kai when he eats/drinks, and he is able to make certain target sounds in his speech, Kai will not need another surgery at this time! His surgical needs will be re-evaluated in a year to see how/if the fistulas are impacting Kai.
This was not even on my list of possible outcomes; a wonderful surprise indeed. A fourth major surgery in two years is a big deal. This postponement will let him have some much needed time time off. Kai will be able to go to cook outs and pool parties and not have the planned 6 weeks of restricted diet and playgroups. Summer fun, here we come!
